About the museum

The idea of creating a museum of the history of pharmacy emerged at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Seville at the end of the 20th century, when several professors and graduates began to gather material with the help of pharmaceutical colleges and private individuals. Part of these holdings, deposited on loan by the Fundación Farmacéutica Avenzoar, was shown in 1999 in the exhibition “La Farmacia y el arte de curar” at the Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares de Sevilla.

By 2008 there were already thousands of uncatalogued pieces, and Professor Antonio Ramos Carrillo took on the inventory and cataloguing. The museum was officially established in 2012 as a university collection; besides exhibiting, it serves teaching, research and public outreach, and from a regulatory point of view it is considered a permanent exhibition. It is located on the basement level of the Faculty of Pharmacy.

More than 2,000 pieces have been inventoried, supplemented by utensils donated by pharmacies, whose social history is studied by the museum’s own team. The display offers an overview of the professional and scientific activity of pharmacists in the 19th and early 20th centuries and is organised into six collections: the Antigua Farmacia del Salvador, the Antigua Farmacia Feria 116, the Oficina de Farmacia, the Rebotica, the Laboratorio and the Especialidades Farmacéuticas. In 2020 the museum received a Certificate of Commendation from the AIHP.
