About the museum
The church of Santa María in Becerril de Campos, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1973, is one of the oldest churches in the town and preserves remains of the earlier Romanesque church, visible in the columns and capitals of the north wall. The building shows several construction phases, from the Romanesque period to the 18th century: it has two naves, a narrower and older one and a central one from the 16th century, and a small chapel of the Four Evangelists. The entrance arch bears the date 1595, and its portico, with slender Ionic columns, is unusual. Since 1996 it has been used as a museum of sacred art, and today it is the first site of the Museo Territorial Campos del Renacimiento, with the proposal “Tierra de María”.
The museum brings together sacred works of art from the seven churches the town once had, signed by artists such as Pedro Berruguete, Alejo de Vahía, Juan de Juni and Jan van Dornick, as well as a notable collection of religious goldsmiths' work. Alejo de Vahía, who had his workshop in Becerril, is represented by up to 23 attributed sculptures, the largest collection of this artist. In the sotocoro (the space under the choir) an alfarje (timber ceiling) with human figures and fantastic animals is preserved.
