About the museum
The museum is devoted to the artist Narciso Maisterra, born in Palencia, who studied at the University of Madrid and attended classes at the Círculo de Bellas Artes. Shortly after graduating he travelled to the United States, where he stayed and developed the first phase of his work, with exhibitions in New York; for 17 years he taught art at The Wheeler School in Providence. In the 1980s he settled in Cantabria and exhibited in Madrid and other cities. He died in July 2022, at the age of 89.
The museum, on Calle Rica in Fuentes de Valdepero, about 5 km from Palencia, occupies two former farmhouses built of stone, adobe, brick and little wood. They were restored as faithfully as possible as examples of vernacular architecture of the last two centuries. Each building has two floors, with 600 m² per floor, and there is also a garden of 150 m².
Maisterra’s painting, created between 1960 and 1980 in the United States and continued afterwards in Spain, is exhibited and preserved here. His sculptural work remained in the United States, mostly in private collections, and the museum keeps numerous photographic records of it. It also offers a programme of cultural activities.
