About the museum
The IVAM is the modern and contemporary art museum of the Generalitat Valenciana. Its collection began to take shape in 1984 with works by artists such as Eduardo Arroyo, Equipo Crónica, Antoni Tàpies or Eusebio Sempere, but its real starting point came in 1985, with the purchase and donation of a large group of works by the sculptor Julio González, given by his heirs.
To this core was added the donation of Ignacio Pinazo, which underlined the early connection of the Valencian scene with modernity. From these two pillars, the collection expanded to follow the story of art history, from the historical avant-gardes to post-war abstraction, pop art and new figuration, without forgetting the Valencian context, with groups such as Grupo Parpalló or Estampa Popular.
The museum now occupies the Centre Julio González, a building designed by the Valencian architects Emilio Giménez and Carlos Salvadores, in the city centre. Besides the collection, the IVAM holds documentary archives such as those of Josep Renau and Julio González, and has a library and educational and public programmes.
