About the museum
Las Bóvedas del Carmen is a heritage tourist site in Ávila that reopened in 2022 with a permanent exhibition devoted to the city's former alcázar. It also displays pieces found in various archaeological excavations carried out in Ávila.
The exhibition reconstructs the alcázar in three dimensions at three periods: the 15th century, in the time of Henry IV; the 16th century, with the reforms of Philip II; and the 19th century, until its demolition. The reconstructions are based on plans by military engineers and on documents from the Archivo General de Simancas.
The alcázar was a royal residence and the setting for events such as the so-called Farsa de Ávila. It later passed to the Ministry of War and to the town council, deteriorated and was demolished in the middle decades of the 20th century. Today the 15th-century escarpment and the moat are preserved.
