About the museum
The Museo Riatas is a private initiative of the siblings Gloria and Longino, who have gathered thousands of objects of everyday country life in the village of Riatas, part of the municipality of Sotalbo (Ávila).
The collection is displayed in a former livestock barn. The original mangers have been turned into display cases, so the building itself forms part of the exhibition. Some pieces come from donations by residents and visitors, such as a sugar scale used for sugar sold loose or a milking machine with its bucket.
The founders' aim is for young people, and above all children, to learn how animals were worked and cared for, what the tools of the fields and the vegetable garden were like, and how the casseroles, cooking pots and frying pans used beside the fire were used.
