About the museum
Vetonia, Cultura y Naturaleza is a permanent exhibition of the Diputación de Ávila dedicated to the first settlers of the Ávila territory, the Vettones. It is in the former stables of the Torreón de los Guzmanes, the palace that is now the seat of the Diputación Provincial. The palace was built in 1513 on the orders of Garcibáñez de Múxica over an earlier building that had belonged to Sancho del Águila; in 1878 Alfonso XII stayed there during a visit to the city.
The exhibition is arranged in about a dozen rooms with a teaching approach. It explains the architecture and daily life of the Vettones, their industry, livestock farming and agriculture, their social organisation and funerary rituals. It dwells on the sites and monuments that survive in the province, such as the hillforts (castros) of La Mesa de Miranda and Las Cogotas, the Toros de Guisando and the Toro de Villanueva del Campillo, and on the verracos, the animal sculptures characteristic of this culture.
The Torreón also houses the Sala Central, in the former stables and cellars, and the courtyard gallery, where temporary exhibitions are mounted. Visiting the permanent exhibition is free of charge.
