Palacio de Superunda – Colección Caprotti

16th-century Renaissance palace turned municipal museum, with the collection of the painter Guido Caprotti, works by Sorolla and period furniture.

Opening hoursAdmission €5

About the museum

The palace was built at the end of the 16th century for the town councillor (regidor) Pedro Ochoa de Aguirre. Its ashlar granite façade is flanked by two towers. Inside, the lintelled courtyard (patio adintelado) has restrained decoration, and the stone staircase is attributed to stonemasons from Cardeñosa. The current name comes from the Count of Superunda, one of its later owners. The building was declared a national monument in 1992 and restored.

In the 20th century it was bought by the Italian painter Guido Caprotti (1887–1966), who had been linked to Ávila since 1916 and lived there with his family. It now belongs to the Ávila town council and operates as a museum with the Colección Caprotti–De la Torre, made up of the painter's works, the furniture and household items of the house, ceramics, an 18th-century codex, and works of art such as two paintings by Joaquín Sorolla, shown in the so-called Sorolla room (sala de los Sorolla).

The visit includes a room dedicated to the family, with its family tree, the painter's honours (among them that of adoptive son of Ávila) and sculptures by his son Óscar Caprotti. On the upper floor, rooms have been recreated as the family lived in them, and the work of the miniaturist and watercolourist Laura de la Torre (1895–1988), Caprotti's wife, is presented, with miniatures dedicated to queens of Spain and England.
