About the museum
The museum was created in 1964 on the initiative of the local scholar and collector Eumenio García Neira. Its first collection was kept in the town hall; after a move, part of the holdings was lost and the museum was greatly reduced. It reopened in 1983 in the basement of the town hall, and between 2000 and 2008 a renovation project led to the present MARCA.
The museum occupies a building from 1892 that was a dwelling and, from 1936, a wine cellar. The architect Samuel Folguera restored it, keeping the original structure and adding modern materials such as glass and steel.
The exhibition traces local history from prehistory to the 20th century and highlights materials from the sites of Castro Ventosa and La Edrada, in the territory of Bergidum Flavium. On the ground floor are the reception, the shop, the Tourist Office and the temporary exhibitions; in the basement there is an ethnographic section on Cacabelos in the 20th century, and the main collection is on the first floor. It has belonged to the Red de Museos de Castilla y León since 2007.
