About the museum
The museum is in the Casa de los Escudos, an 18th-century mansion in the late Baroque style with Rococo influences, built by Francisco García de las Llanas. The coats of arms on the façade recall his paternal lineage and his maternal family. The interior was renovated in the 1990s, the museum project was developed between 2002 and 2003, and the museum opened on 22 March 2003. It is run by Ponferrada Town Council.
The core of the collection is some 200 radio receivers assembled by Luis del Olmo, considered one of the most complete in Spain. It shows the technical and aesthetic evolution of the sets, from the first galena (crystal) receivers to the transistors of the 1970s and today's digital radios.
The museum has a radio classroom, where receivers from European and American manufacturers such as Telefunken, Philips or Crosley are displayed, and it offers historical recordings of Spanish radio, produced with the collaboration of RNE, SER, COPE and Onda Cero. It also has a specialist library, a restoration workshop, an archive of sound documents and the “Estación-Escuela Luis del Olmo”, designed for schoolchildren.
