About the museum
The museum opened in 1999 on the site of the former station of the Minero Siderúrgica de Ponferrada (MSP), the company that worked the coal reserves of the Sil basins in El Bierzo and Laciana. It pays tribute to the hundreds of men and women who worked in the extraction and transport of coal and iron during the 20th century.
The narrow-gauge Ponferrada–Villablino railway, known as the Ponfeblino, entered service in 1919 to carry coal from the mines to Ponferrada. In addition to freight, it carried passengers until 1980, and it was the last line in Spain to keep steam locomotives in service.
Today the station hall houses a collection of locomotives from different periods, some of them genuine treasures of industrial archaeology. The station building also preserves plans, graphic material and literature on the railway and mining, and the EstaciónArte space shows works by visual artists from Ponferrada and El Bierzo.
