About the museum
The Museo Arqueológico Municipal de Elda opened in 1983 with objects from the Archaeology Section of the Centro Excursionista Eldense and from private collections. It occupies one floor of the Casa de Cultura on Calle Príncipe de Asturias.
It was expanded in 2011 and now has a temporary exhibition room on the ground floor and two permanent exhibition rooms on the first and second floors. There is also a support library for students and other interested visitors.
Much of the collection comes from the city's three Bienes de Interés Cultural (Assets of Cultural Interest): the site of El Monastil, the Castillo-Palacio of Elda and the Atalaya de la Sierra de la Torreta. It is supplemented by pieces from the old town, from Roman villas along the banks of the Vinalopó and from the site of Monte Bolón.
The museum holds more than 146,000 pieces, of which only around 890 are on display.
