About the museum
The former Museo Arqueológico de Novelda was founded in early 1980, thanks to the interest of the newly formed democratic Town Council in recovering the town's cultural heritage. It drew on the archaeological collections of Juan Ribelles Amorós and Manuel Romero Iñesta and was installed in the former Palacio de la Señoría. In 1983, after official recognition by the Ministry of Culture, it moved to the Casa de Cultura, where it remains.
The collection was expanded with materials from the excavations at the Castillo de la Mola from 1983, and with a palaeontology section, opened in 1989 and closed in 2003. In 1996 the Conselleria de Cultura recognised the Museo Histórico-Artístico de la Ciudad, with its archaeology and palaeontology sections, as a permanent museum of the Valencian Community.
The permanent exhibition follows the people who lived in the valley from the Palaeolithic, through the Neolithic, the Bronze Age, Iberian culture, Romanisation and the Islamic and Late Medieval periods, up to modern and contemporary Novelda. The museum is working on a new museum project.
