About the museum

The house was designed at the request of Antonia Navarro Mira as a family residence. The architect Pedro Cerdán Martínez, from Murcia, began the works around 1900 and finished them in 1903. It is an example of Valencian Modernism in Novelda, with wrought-iron balconies and windows, a distinctive staircase and an inner courtyard with white marble columns.

The family lived in the building until 1936. Towards the end of the Civil War it housed the Italian military command, and afterwards it served as a school. In 1975 the Caja de Ahorros de Novelda bought the property, and in 1977 the Caja de Ahorros del Mediterráneo restored it and opened it as a museum.

Today it belongs to the Fundación Mediterráneo, and its rooms remain in good condition, with carved woodwork, stained glass, stucco, painted ceilings and period furniture. The collection continues to grow: the foundation has added original pieces belonging to Doña Antonia, such as furniture, silverware, glassware and a portrait of Manuel Benedito, and in the dining room it has recreated a table set in the Modernist style.
