About the museum
The museum has its origins in the Grupo Arqueológico Petrelense, formed at the end of the 1960s by young people from Petrer interested in local history and heritage, and renamed the Grupo Arqueológico Dámaso Navarro in tribute to its founder, who died at the end of the 1970s. The group surveyed the municipal area, identified prehistoric, classical and medieval sites, and took part in the recovery of the Roman mosaic that came to light in 1975 next to the town hall, which gave its name to the settlement of Villa Petraria.
The first museum opened on 2 July 1999 in the Plaza de Baix, in the building that until the previous year had housed the municipal library, with a section on archaeology and another on ethnology. It closed in September 2017 because of the limitations of the building, including the lack of accessibility.
Following the temporary exhibition “Petrer. Arqueología y Museo”, presented at the MARQ in Alicante in 2018, the municipal building on Calle La Font was adapted. The new museum opened on 8 February 2019 with almost 700 m² of usable space and a permanent exhibition running from prehistory to the 20th century, which integrates a Roman kiln from the 3rd century AD preserved in its original place.
