About the museum
The museum occupies the former Hospital de la Caridad in Portmán, a single-storey building with a small central chapel and a simple octagonal tower. The hospital was built in 1892 at the initiative of José Maestre Pérez and financed by the mining entrepreneur Miguel Zapata, to care for workers injured in the mines. It was run by the Sisters of San Vicente de Paúl. Between 1988 and 1992 the building was restored and converted into a museum.
The collection traces human presence in the Sierra Minera of Cartagena-La Unión, from the earliest traces to the end of mining. Rooms I to III are devoted to the archaeology of the sierra, ore processing and Roman architecture. Room IV is devoted to the mosaic and wall paintings of the Roman villa of El Paturro, and Room V, the Chapel Room, to the revival of mining and the legacy of its closure.
The highlight is a large polychrome mosaic from the El Paturro villa, considered one of the most important in the Region of Murcia. Amphorae, ceramics and coins from the Roman Republic are also on display.
