About the museum
The Museo del Cante de las Minas occupies the ground floor of the Casa del Piñón, a building from 1899 declared a Bien de Interés Cultural and seat of the town council of La Unión. It opened in 2010. Its route traces the history of La Unión through the mining songs, to convey how hard the work in the mine was and the living conditions from which these songs emerged.
The visit also covers the history of the International Festival of the Cante de las Minas, held since 1961, with a documentary, audiovisual and graphic archive. Visitors can see and hear performances from various editions, as well as the festival’s trophies, a collection of posters, a large model of the former Mercado Público and a sculpture by Martín Chirino.
According to the municipal website, the museum is temporarily closed while it relocates to the former Mercado Público, the festival’s venue.
