About the museum
The museum occupies the former schools of Roche, a building erected in 1909 and refurbished in 2010 to house the ethnographic collection of the municipality of La Unión. It belongs to the town council and is part of the network of municipal museums, together with the Museo Minero and the Museo Arqueológico de Portmán.
The exhibition is arranged in two rooms. The first traces the history of the municipality, from antiquity, when the area stood out for its strategic position and natural resources, to the 19th century, when La Unión became established as a town. Written documents referring to Roche date from the 16th century.
The second room deals with local ethnography. The arrival of new residents drawn by the mining boom made the town's growth possible, and the collection reflects the customs, mentalities and daily life of that society, including the contrast between wealthy miners and workers. Among the objects on display are household lighting utensils, weights and measures, ceramics and glassware, clothing, farm implements and esparto containers.
