About the museum

The museum was founded as the Museo Provincial by royal order of the Ministry of Public Works (Ministerio de Fomento) on 6 July 1864, at the initiative of the Provincial Commission of Monuments. It first occupied the Teatro de los Infantes, then the Contraste de la Seda building and, from 1910, the building that now houses the Museo de Bellas Artes, where the art and archaeology collections shared the space.

In 1953 the archaeological collections moved to the present building, constructed between 1941 and 1953 by the architects Luis Moya Blanco and José Luis de León as the Casa de la Cultura and Provincial Palace of Archives, Libraries and Museums. In 1962 the collection and the building were declared a historic-artistic monument; today they are a Bien de Interés Cultural (asset of cultural interest).

The permanent exhibition traces the archaeology of Murcia and its region from the Palaeolithic to the Late Roman period. The ground floor is devoted to prehistory, with the region's rock art, the Chalcolithic, the Argaric Bronze Age and metallurgy; the upper floor covers writing, Iberian culture, Rome and early Christianity up to the Visigothic period. Medieval Islamic archaeology is presented in the nearby Museo de Santa Clara.
