About the museum
The museum occupies the chapter house and part of the old 14th-century cloister of Murcia Cathedral, conceived by Bishop Miguel de los Santos. It opened to the public in 1956 and underwent a thorough refurbishment that brought previously unseen decorative elements to light.
The pieces are presented by groups. On the ground floor are, among others, the so-called Campana Mora, the Sarcophagus of the Muses, altarpieces by Bernabé de Módena, a Gothic altarpiece of Saint Michael, the Ark of the Holy Thursday Monument and the Corpus Christi monstrance by Antonio Pérez de Montalvo.
The upper floor houses works such as the Betrothal of the Virgin and the Adoration of the Shepherds by Fernando de Llanos, dated 1516, a reliquary bust of Prisciliano and the Penitent Saint Jerome by Salzillo. A walkway of wood, metal and glass allows visitors to see the archaeological remains beneath the floor and understand how the building changed over the centuries.
