About the museum
The Museo de la Ciudad de Murcia is housed in the former home of the López-Ferrer family, a 19th-century building on a site with a long history. In the 16th century the so-called Torre de Junterón, the residence of Gil Rodríguez de Junterón, stood there. Behind the house is a garden in Hispano-Muslim style, watered by the Caravija irrigation channel, which is mentioned in records from 1479.
The building passed to the municipality in 1988 through a donation from the López-Ferrer family. Shortly afterwards it was refurbished to house a museum on the history of Murcia, which opened on 18 May 1999, International Museum Day.
The rooms are spread over three floors and follow a chronological order. Using original pieces, models and reproductions, they show the history, tangible and intangible heritage, art, craftsmanship and ethnography of the city and its surrounding area. There is a medieval archaeology room, a space called “Hoy enseñamos” (“Today we show”), and a small courtyard where events and workshops are held.
