About the museum
The museum protects part of a Roman salting factory from the 4th and 5th centuries AD, located beside the port of Mazarrón, then an important economic centre linked to fishing. Salted fish and fish sauces such as garum, highly prized in the Roman market, were produced on these premises.
The most characteristic feature of the site is its salting tanks (piletas de salazón). The archaeological site is declared an Asset of Cultural Interest with the category of Archaeological Zone (Decree 33/1995).
As well as the remains in situ, the museum displays archaeological material from Mazarrón and its port.
