Opening hoursAdmission €1.50 Partially accessible

About the museum

The museum was founded in 1917 on the initiative of the Sociedade Pro-Monte, which first housed it in the town centre of A Guarda. In 1953 it moved to the present building, located in the hillfort area on the summit of Mount Santa Trega. The Galician-Roman settlement has been known since the excavations of the early 20th century and was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1931.

The collection comes from several excavation campaigns at the fortified settlement. Most of the pieces belong to the period of the hillfort's greatest development, between the 1st century BC and the 2nd century AD. Later excavations have also uncovered remains from the Palaeolithic, the Neolithic and the Bronze Age, showing that the mouth of the Miño was inhabited long before.

The exhibition room covers about 120 m² and traces the successive stages of the hillfort, from prehistory to Roman influence. The museum also has a room for educational workshops, mainly for schoolchildren, and audio guides that can be downloaded to a mobile phone.
