About the museum
The Museo do Mar of A Guarda occupies a circular building that replicates the old defensive watchtower that stood at the end of the seafront promenade, next to the north breakwater of the port. That 17th-century fortress was demolished in the mid-20th century and its stones were reused in the breakwater; the present replica was built in 1997. The building belongs to A Guarda's network of municipal museums and has been part of the Rede de Espazos Museísticos Atlánticos (Atlantic Museum Spaces Network) since 2019.
A Guarda has a long seafaring tradition, and the museum was created to preserve the memory of that trade and its role in the economy of local families. The ethnographic collection brings together gear and rigging of traditional fishing, mainly inshore fishing, some of it now out of use. The malacological collection displays thousands of shells and molluscs from around the world, classified by family, gathered and documented by the malacologist Ignacio Navarro.
The exhibition is complemented by information panels, projections and tactile information points, as well as videos on the intangible maritime heritage (“Xentes do mar”, “Lendas de mar”, “Mulleres do mar” and “Tesouros vivos”).
