About the museum
The Colección museográfica de las Escuelas Pías is located in the Residencia Calasanz, on Calle de Gaztambide, in the Madrid district of Chamberí, and belongs to the Piarist Fathers. It brings together a broad collection of sacred art, with numerous works of religious sculpture and important paintings by Ribera, El Greco and Goya, among others.
The museum is visited in two spaces. The painting room displays mainly canvases with religious subjects from the Old and New Testaments, by some of the most outstanding painters of the Spanish Baroque, such as Ribera, El Greco, Francisco Bayeu and Pedro de Orrente, together with works by Flemish authors. It also shows an original portrait of Azorín, pieces of religious sculpture and goldwork, and a 16th-century Book of Hours.
The second space is the chapel, where the canvas “La Última Comunión de San José de Calasanz”, painted by Goya in 1819, is displayed. In the painting room, “La Oración del Huerto”, also by Goya, stands out.
