About the museum
The first Guardia Civil Museum was created in 1914, when Agustín Luque y Coca was Director General, at the Colegio Infanta María Teresa. It was dismantled in 1937 during the Civil War, and much of its collection was lost.
Between 1946 and 2010 the Guardia Civil had a room in the Army Museum in the Palacio del Buen Retiro in Madrid. It was reduced to a single display case in 2010, when the Army Museum moved to Toledo.
The current museum opened on 12 October 1982, presided over by King Juan Carlos I, at the corps’ central headquarters on Calle de Guzmán el Bueno. It occupies about 350 square metres across four rooms: flags, weapons, uniforms and mannequins, and miscellaneous objects and dioramas. It depends on the Guardia Civil’s Historical Studies Service. A project for a new museum is currently underway, and until it opens, in-person visits are not possible.
