About the museum

The museum occupies the house in Ferreirela de Baxo, in Santa Eulalia de Oscos, where Antonio Raimundo Ibáñez, the future Marquis of Sargadelos, was born in 1749. Ibáñez was a merchant, industrialist and figure of the Enlightenment. At the end of the 18th century he promoted in Sargadelos (Cervo, Lugo) one of Spain’s first cast-iron foundries and a ceramics factory, and he died in 1809.

The house is an 18th-century dwelling, restored with period-style furnishings. It retains features typical of a rural holding in western Asturias, such as the bread oven, the hórreo (raised granary), the forge, the cellar, the washhouse, the courtyard and the balconies, and it has an exhibition room dedicated to the marquis.

The display recalls his link with a region with a long tradition of ironworking and shows traditional life in the area, alongside original pieces from the foundry and the Sargadelos pottery factory. The museum is within the Oscos-Eo Biosphere Reserve and forms part of the network of ethnographic museums of Asturias. In addition to visits, it organises craft workshops and theatrical activities.
