About the museum
Os Teixóis is a small village in the municipality of Taramundi, within the Os Oscos-Eo and Terras de Burón Biosphere Reserve, which preserves a remarkable set of water-powered machinery. Besides its vernacular architecture (houses, cabazos, hórreos and outbuildings), it has a forge hammer (mazo), a mill, a grindstone, a small hydroelectric plant and a fulling mill, all in good condition and in working order.
The mazo was used to stretch iron, from which field tools and utensils such as braziers, frying pans and ladles were made. The water of the Mestas stream also drove the mill, which belonged to several owners and was used in turns (the “quendas”). The fulling mill, a rough wooden machine powered by water, beat cloth to strengthen it, and the grindstone was used to sharpen cutting tools.
Full restoration of the complex began in 1989 and rehabilitation work has continued since then. Os Teixóis was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2005, in the category of Historic Ensemble, and is one of the most important ethnographic complexes in Asturias. The visit is always accompanied by a guide.
