About the museum
Casa Orduña was built after the great earthquake of 1644, which devastated the region and ruined the castle’s outbuildings. It was erected by the Orduña family, of Basque origin, who had come to El Castell de Guadalest as trusted servants of the Cardona family, admirals of Aragon. In 1542 Sancho de Cardona received the title of Marquis of Guadalest, and the Orduña family served them as alcaides (governors) of the fortress and governors of their estates.
The house was set on fire and looted during the War of the Spanish Succession, in 1708. In 1756 Pedro Antonio Buenaventura de Orduña y García joined the Military Order of Santiago, thereby giving the family access to the noble estate.
Today it is a municipal museum showing a noble house with kitchen, dining room, bedrooms and library, as well as exhibition rooms. From the museum, visitors can reach the Castillo de San José, the village’s fortress, whose construction began in the 11th century.
