About the museum
The museum opened in March 2009 on the initiative of the Cofradía del Santo Ecce-Homo, on which it depends. Its aim is to show the artistic and devotional heritage that was previously kept in the sanctuary of the Ecce Homo, together with some Holy Week processional floats.
It occupies the site of the former Museo “Alto Bierzo”, which was housed in the municipal schools and, earlier, in the hermitage of San Antonio Abad, which disappeared at the end of the 18th century. In 2013 a plaque was placed in homage to Ángeles Alonso, founder of the first museum and of the Taller de Costura, a group of volunteers who look after the vestments and ornaments.
The collection includes a 17th-century carved figure of Jesús Nazareno, floats of San Juan, of the Verónica and of the Trompetero, an early 20th-century banner, a carriage of 1931, a 1675 float frame (portaformas), a 19th-century silver lamp, a catafalque, ornaments, papal bulls and indulgences, and an ivory crucifix.
