About the museum
The museum opened in 1980 to protect, study and publicise the historical heritage of Paterna. It occupies a building from 1881 that was the town hall of the village. Its holdings come entirely from excavations carried out in the municipality and are mainly medieval, since Paterna was a major pottery centre.
Archaeological work carried out since the 1980s has brought to light a Renaissance quarter, a Muslim cemetery, sections of the city wall, the potters’ quarters of the Ollerías Mayores and Ollerías Menores, other industrial installations and a Roman villa.
The collection brings together some 9,000 inventoried pieces of Paterna pottery production, from the 12th century to the late 16th century. The rooms are devoted to socarrats, rodells, green and manganese ware, blue ware, common pottery (obra aspra) and gilded ware. The museum is a reference for the study and conservation of medieval ceramics, and has taken exhibitions of Paterna ceramics to several countries. It also organises workshops, excursions and cultural meetings for children and adults.
