About the museum
The museum belongs to the Artillery Academy of Segovia, heir to the Royal Artillery College, which was inaugurated on 16 May 1764 during the reign of Charles III. The college was first installed in the Alcázar of Segovia and, after the fire that destroyed the fortress in 1862, moved to the former convent of San Francisco, at the foot of the aqueduct. The institution itself describes itself as possibly the oldest officer training centre still in operation in the world.
The museum occupies rooms in that building, now the Cuartel de San Francisco, and is organised into four galleries: portable weapons and miscellaneous equipment, materials, rockets, and science and technology. It shows everything from the first rifle made in 1893 at the Oviedo Arms Factory to the Teruel rocket, as well as technical devices of its era such as a Watt engine and the Colman hand calculator.
The science and technology room also holds a geological collection of more than 3,400 catalogued specimens, considered one of the most notable in Spain. As the museum is inside a military compound, it can only be visited by appointment.
