About the museum
The Museo de la Campana grew out of the wish of a group of enthusiasts of the bell-making tradition, which is deeply rooted in the former Junta de Siete Villas, who met at the Centro Cultural de las Campanas de Meruelo. With the support of the town council and the enthusiasm of the craftsman Abel Portilla, from a long family of bell-founders, it was inaugurated on 16 August 2003.
It is located in the former schools of San Mamés, opposite the church, in a spacious space accessible to people with reduced mobility. The visit, of a little over half an hour, begins with the complete process of casting a bell: the layouts, the moulds and the raw materials, such as clay, copper and tin, presented in wooden modules with explanatory panels, alongside the working tools.
Then the visit moves on to the collection: large bells hung from a metal frame, small bells and smaller pieces donated by the workshops of Abel and Marcos Portilla, as well as tools for making moulds, such as terrajas (profile templates) and regletas (strips), a furnace and decorative elements. The museum also serves as an open space for future researchers of a tradition that is still alive.
