About the museum

The mills on the right bank of the Segura river, next to the Puente Viejo, are documented from 1364. After a flood of the river in 1743 left the medieval wooden structure unusable, a new stone building was erected in 1785, with the wheels arranged along the course of the river so as not to obstruct the flow of water. It came to have 24 wheels, which gave rise to the name “Molino de las 24 piedras” (Mill of the 24 Stones).

During the 19th century ownership of the mills passed from the town council to small proprietors. With industrialisation they could not compete with modern grinding systems, and they were used to produce animal feed or to grind peppers until the mid-1970s of the 20th century, when they were abandoned.

In 1983 the Ministry of Public Works commissioned the architect Juan Navarro Baldeweg to design a project to reuse the complex as a cultural centre and hydraulic museum. The rehabilitated building opened in 1989 and preserves the machinery and parts of the mills.

Today it is a municipal space that combines a permanent exhibition on the operation and evolution of water mills, from prehistory to the present, with a continuous programme of temporary exhibitions and workshops for primary and secondary school pupils.
