About the museum
The museum preserves the heritage of the Real, Muy Ilustre, Venerable y Antiquísima Archicofradía de la Preciosísima Sangre de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo (Royal, Most Illustrious, Venerable and Most Ancient Archconfraternity of the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ), known as the “coloraos”, founded in 1411. Its first home occupied some narrow rooms of the Church of El Carmen, which were hard to reach, so for years the collection stood outside the city’s cultural and tourist circuits.
In 2014 the museum moved to the Sala del Martillo, on the Glorieta de España, with the exhibition “Lazos de Sangre: tres siglos de arte y devoción en Murcia” (Blood Ties: three centuries of art and devotion in Murcia), which remained open until 2018. Meanwhile the permanent home was adapted in the premises of the former Colegio del Carmen, next to the parish church of the same name, made available by the Ayuntamiento and fitted out by the brotherhood with its own funds.
The museographic approach presents processional sculpture as an alternative to the school of Francisco Salzillo. Notable works include those by Nicolás de Bussy (San Pedro from “La Negación”, 1689, and the Ecce Homo from “El Pretorio”, 1699), the Samaritana by Roque López (1799) and the groups by Juan González Moreno made in the 20th century. The collection also includes embroidery, costumes, goldsmith work, metalwork and musical instruments. The brotherhood’s principal image, the Santísimo Cristo de la Sangre by Bussy (1693), is venerated in its chapel in the Church of El Carmen.
