About the museum
La Zaragozana was founded on the initiative of a group of influential people from Aragon who wanted to make use of the region’s abundant barley. The company was established on 10 July 1900 as the “Fábrica de Cerveza, Malta y Hielo” (Beer, Malt and Ice Factory), with the mayor of Zaragoza, Ladislao Goizueta, as its first president. The founders sponsored the engineer Antonio Mayandía to study breweries in Germany; on his return he built the first buildings, in German style, in the San José district, then outside the urban centre. To brew the beer, they hired the German brewer Charles Schlaffer.
In 1976 the company launched Ámbar Sin, the first non-alcoholic beer in Spain, and in 1998 it became the first Spanish brewer with ISO 9001 certification. Production was later moved to another bottling plant, but the original factory is still standing.
To mark the centenary, the museum opened in the original factory in 2000. It explains the brewing process, the history of the company and its products, and preserves spaces such as the malt house, the brewhouse and the fermentation room. Today it can only be visited with a prior reservation, on a guided tour that ends with a tasting of Ambar beers.
