Museo del Teatro de Caesaraugusta

Site museum with the ruins of the Roman theatre of Caesaraugusta, walkways over the remains and an interpretation centre in Zaragoza.

Opening hoursAdmission €4 Wheelchair accessible

About the museum

The Roman theatre of Caesaraugusta was built in the 1st century AD. With about 7,000 square metres and room for some 6,000 spectators, it was one of the largest in Hispania. Its ruins were discovered in 1972 during works in the historic centre of Zaragoza, and after several years of excavation and restoration the museum opened to the public in 2003.

Visitors walk along walkways from which the remains of the tiers and the stage can be seen, protected by a large translucent canopy. Next to them, a building was rehabilitated, the former house of the Justicia de Aragón Juan del Pueyo, which now houses an interpretation centre on the theatre, dramatic genres and the social and political life of the period. The route begins on the first floor and descends to floor -1 to end at the monument.

The room “El solar, testigo de la historia” follows the evolution of the site after the theatre was abandoned: Muslim dwellings, the Jewish quarter, the Renaissance splendour of the area, with houses such as that of Gabriel Zaporta, up to the discovery of 1972. The museum is part of the Caesaraugusta Route, together with the Forum, River Port and Public Baths museums.
