About the museum
The museum displays the pieces of the Rosario de Cristal procession, which winds through Zaragoza's old town every 13 October during the Pilar festivities. It is housed in the former church of the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, on Plaza de San Pedro Nolasco, next to the remains of the Roman theatre of Caesaraugusta.
The procession dates back to 1889, when the Cofradía del Santísimo Rosario de Nuestra Señora del Pilar was founded. Its president proposed carrying lanterns instead of the traditional torches, candles and banners. The idea came from Calatayud, and the municipal architect Ricardo Magdalena was commissioned to design them.
The collection brings together hundreds of lanterns representing the parts of the rosary prayer, as well as fifteen leaded glass floats dedicated to the mysteries. Among the monumental floats are the Santa Capilla, the oldest, the Basilica of the Pilar and the Queen of Hispanidad. The pieces leave the museum only for the procession on 13 October.
