About the museum
The Colegiata del Santísimo Sacramento in Torrijos was built between 1509 and 1518, at the initiative of Teresa Enríquez, as the seat of the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament, on the site of a former mosque. Its architect is not known for certain; it is attributed to Antón Egas, with work by Alonso de Covarrubias on the portal and other elements.
The museum was founded in 2002 at the initiative of the association Amigos de la Colegiata de Torrijos, after the complete restoration of the church, and belongs to the parish. In February 2019, on the occasion of the fifth centenary of the collegiate church, it was refurbished and reopened with new display cases, a more accessible layout and information panels; some works were also moved there from the Cathedral of Toledo.
The collection brings together paintings by artists such as Luis Tristán, Luca Giordano, Pedro de Orrente, Juan Carreño de Miranda and Francisco Bayeu, small polychrome wooden carvings, reliquaries of San Lorenzo, San Esteban and the Lignum Crucis, chalices of goldsmith's work from around 1500 and 1515, and textiles embroidered by the Covarrubias family, together with choir books from the 16th to the 18th centuries.
