About the museum

The Museo La Celestina is dedicated to the work of Fernando de Rojas and to the life of the author, a native of La Puebla de Montalbán, and it is unique in the world as a museum devoted to La Celestina. It is owned by the town council, which manages it through its culture department, and it also functions as the municipal tourist office. It opened its doors in 2003, after refurbishment works that began in 2000.

The building on Avenida de Madrid was bequeathed in 1897 for use as a hospital, and it served as one between 1900 and 1962. In 1912 the heirs donated it to the town council. It then housed a recognised free secondary school (colegio libre adoptado) and, until the refurbishment, several local cultural associations.

The rooms house the V Centenary collection, made up of paintings by Teo Puebla that illustrate the edition of La Celestina published in 1999; a room on the work and the history of the town; another devoted to Fernando de Rojas and his era; rooms for tools and farm implements, old photographs and medieval costumes; and a temporary exhibition room. The museum is also the centre of the Festival Celestina, which is held in summer in the town.
