About the museum

The idea for the museum came up in 1998, when Professor Ana Vega Navarro proposed it in the Department of Didactics and Educational Research of the University of La Laguna. The Faculty of Education board approved the project on 22 January 1999, with the aim of preserving, disseminating and researching the educational past. Since then it has operated as the Aula Cultural (cultural unit) of the Vice-Rectorate for University Extension, and it also receives support from the Directorate General of Historical Heritage of the Government of the Canary Islands.

The permanent exhibition is in a room of the Central Building of the Faculty, a mid-20th-century building, and recreates the setting in which teaching took place in the past century. It is organised around two classrooms, one from 1940–1950 and one from 1970–1980, with furniture and teaching materials from those decades, administrative documents, photographs and panels on the working conditions of teachers.

The collection also includes embroidery, collections of books and games, and a photographic archive of school subjects, partly digitised. Primary and secondary school groups can visit the museum with information-search workbooks adapted to each level.
