About the museum
The house belonged to Francisco de Quevedo y Villegas, who lived in Torre de Juan Abad for more than seven years between 1610 and 1645. His connection with the town arose from lawsuits with the council over a debt linked to a mortgage loan granted by his mother in 1598. He was exiled there twice and used these stays to study and write: in the house he composed twenty-seven works, among them Política de Dios, Virtud militante, La hora de todos and the sonnet “Retirado en la paz de estos desiertos”.
About 100 square metres of the 17th-century mansion, which Pascual Madoz described in 1850 as the most notable house in the town, have been preserved. They are integrated into a rehabilitated building of almost 1,000 square metres that now functions as a cultural centre. The museum occupies the upper floor and displays the writer’s personal objects, such as a ceramic inkwell and his armchair, as well as books, manuscripts, family trees and his will. The ground floor has a reception, a shop and two rooms for temporary exhibitions, and the courtyard retains the original well and is used for outdoor events. Next to the museum are the Casa de Cultura and the Centro de Estudios Quevedianos; every two years, in the first half of June, the International Congress “Francisco de Quevedo” is held.
