About the museum

The museum occupies a 15th-century manor house on Calle Reyes, where Hernán Pérez del Pulgar was born in 1451. Ciudad Real City Council acquired the building and, after restoring it, opened it in 1990 to bring together much of the work of the painter Manuel López-Villaseñor (Ciudad Real, 1924 – Torrelodones, 1996), who promoted the project and after whom the museum is named.

The façade is Renaissance in style, with a wrought-iron balcony and the family coat of arms. Inside, the Castilian courtyard stands out, with stone columns, a wooden gallery and a central well. The route runs in the reverse order of the artist’s output: the ground floor shows works from his later years, roughly 1973 to 1993, and the upper floor brings together large-format paintings, early works, drawings and sketches, impasto painting, the “Éxodo” series and the painter’s tools.

The collection traces his development from his academic beginnings to a critical realism with touches of Expressionism, and to the still lifes of his last period. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions during the year.
