About the museum
The museum is located in the Parque del Pozo Norte in Puertollano, next to the castillete (headframe) of the former mine shaft, a metal structure reminiscent of Eiffel's designs that gives the site its name. It explains the history of coal in Puertollano and in the province of Ciudad Real, with references to the extraction methods used since 1873.
The centrepiece is the “Mina Imagen”, a recreation of a traditional coal mine with galleries, tools, mine carts and extraction scenes that give an idea of the work underground. The site also includes replicas of the headframe and of the sculpture “Minera de Puertollano”, whose original from 1927, by Julio Antonio, is kept in the Museo de Arte Moderno de Tarragona.
After a period of closure and renovation, the museum reopened in March 2026 and opened to the general public on 24 June 2026. The new phase includes guided tours and virtual reality glasses offering an immersive view of the museum, the mining area and the Carboniferous past of the region. On Sundays the visit is completed with the Monumento Natural del Carbonífero de Puertollano.
