About the museum
The Museo de La Carolina opened on 21 December 2011 to gather, conserve, research and share the historical and cultural heritage of the town. It stands next to the Palacio del Intendente Olavide and the parish church, and covers the history of La Carolina from the first settlements in the Palaeolithic to the end of the 20th century, when its important mining activity came to an end.
The permanent exhibition occupies the former grain silo and an adjoining nave, with some 600 m² open to visitors across the ground floor, walkways and first floor. It is organised into four areas: the municipal area of La Carolina, its surroundings and landscape; local archaeology, with Iberian ceramics, Roman lead objects and weapons from the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212; the Nuevas Poblaciones (New Settlements) of Sierra Morena and Andalusia, founded in 1767 with Central European settlers, of which La Carolina was the capital; and the lead mining of the 19th and 20th centuries, with tools and a walk-through reconstruction of a gallery and a mine face.
The museum also runs the Torre de Perdigones interpretation centre on Calle Ondeanos, which is free to visit, and has a specialist library open to interested members of the public.
