About the museum
The Carmelite provincial museum of sacred art was inaugurated on 13 April 1980, although it did not open to the public until 2018. It stands next to the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Carmen Coronada, in the walled historic centre of Jerez de la Frontera, between the San Miguel and Santiago districts. The Carmelites settled in Jerez in 1587 and in 1600 established themselves permanently on what is now the Plaza del Carmen.
Its collection brings together more than a thousand catalogued pieces of the artistic heritage of the order’s Provincia Bética, mainly from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The exhibition is organised into sections: the camarín (the small Baroque room behind the altar) and the figures involved in the crowning of the Virgin, paintings from the 17th to 19th centuries, embroidery and vestments, sculptures, goldsmith work and the provincial library.
Among the works the museum highlights are Claudio Coello’s canvas “Apotheosis of Saint Peter of Alcántara with Saint Teresa of Jesus”, a 16th-century silver chalice, an important collection of liturgical vestments made of silver tissue and embroidered in gold and silk, and the outfit worn by the Virgin del Carmen at her canonical coronation on 23 April 1925. The spectacular Baroque camarín houses the image of the Virgin del Carmen, of the late 16th-century Seville school, which the founders of the Carmelite community in Jerez brought from Seville. The visit ends in the Carmelite provincial library, with around 15,000 volumes spread across two rooms, one of which is devoted to books bound in parchment from the 15th to the 18th centuries.
