About the museum
The Museo de Paleobotánica opened in July 2002 and was the first museum in Spain devoted exclusively to fossil plants. It is housed in the Molino de la Alegría, a former mill on the Guadalquivir that was restored within the grounds of the Real Jardín Botánico de Córdoba.
Its collection originates from the donation made by Dr Roberto Wagner in 1983, which formed the basis for the garden's Paleobotany Unit. It brings together plant fossils from all geological ages and explains the evolution of plants over time; according to the sources consulted, the garden's holdings exceed 15,000 pieces, of which only a part is on display.
The visit can be complemented by the Museo de Etnobotánica and by the garden's living collections, which are managed by the Instituto Municipal de Gestión Medioambiental (IMGEMA) of the Córdoba city council.
