About the museum
The museum displays the discoveries from the palaeontological sites in the Orce district, in the province of Granada. Its official name at its opening in August 2015 was Centro de Interpretación Primeros Pobladores de Europa Josep Gibert, in honour of the palaeoanthropologist who devoted much of his career to excavating these sites. It houses a collection that was previously held in the Palacio de los Segura and, before that, in the castle tower of the town.
The exhibition offers a journey back some 1.5 million years to explore the climate, flora and fauna among which the first settlers of the Granada Geopark territory lived. The museum draws on the material and scientific information from the geological sites of interest in the municipality: the sites of Venta Micena, Barranco León-5 and Fuente Nueva-3.
The centre runs guided tours for tourist and school groups and science outreach activities (“Ciencia en tu Pueblo”), and has a large space for research activity.
