About the museum
The centre is housed in the Alporchón building, the social headquarters of the Comunidad de Regantes de las Aguas del Mahimón (irrigation community), in Vélez-Blanco. There the irrigators gather, heirs to a centuries-old water culture, and irrigation is distributed through the alporchón system: a daily auction of water turns, directed by the fiel de aguas within the water court (tribunal de aguas).
It opened in 2010 and occupies around 120 square metres in two rooms. Its aim is to recover, inventory, protect and interpret the hydraulic heritage of the Los Vélez region and to give it value as an educational and tourist resource. Through panels and models it explains the region's climate, relief and hydrology, the importance of springs and irrigation, the hydraulic infrastructure, the mills, the electricity and ice factories and the sundials.
