About the museum
The Almacén del Trigo visitor centre occupies a former grain store (pósito) in the old town of Vélez-Blanco and is the visitor centre of the Sierra María-Los Vélez Natural Park. It is part of the network of public-use facilities of the Junta de Andalucía and, according to the Turismo de Andalucía listing, the building also houses the municipal tourist office.
The exhibition is arranged in seven rooms. After a welcome room, it traces the imprint of the cultures that passed through these border lands, from prehistory, with models of rock paintings, to the Islamic period and the medieval castle, as well as people’s relationship with their environment: forest use, aromatic and medicinal plants, agriculture, livestock farming and water mills, including the mechanism of an old mill and a model of a working flour mill.
Other rooms are devoted to the sierra’s geology, born from the collision of the African and European plates and with karst formations; to its flora and fauna, with numerous endemic species; and to the history of travellers, trade and science in the area, including the twinning with the Altmühltal park in Bavaria. Near the centre begins the signposted trail to the Cueva de los Letreros, one of the most important rock-painting sites on the Iberian Peninsula.
